Beyond Bank Volunteer of the Month (January) – Paul Clarke, Cricket Southern Lakes

Paul Recognised as Beyond Bank’s Volunteer of the Month for January.

The Newcastle District Cricket Association is proud to acknowledge the tireless contributions of Paul, who has been awarded Beyond Bank’s Volunteer of the Month for January.

Paul’s dedication to cricket in the Hunter region is nothing short of extraordinary. As a curator, player, and all-around handyman, he has played an integral role in ensuring that local cricket continues to thrive.

For a decade, Paul served as the curator of Dutchy Holland Oval, before moving on to Ron Hill for a couple of years following the passing of Robert Holland. His expertise in wicket preparation has been invaluable, not only for club cricket but also for veterans’ matches across multiple age categories. Over the past six years, he has meticulously curated Waterboard Oval, preparing surfaces for the Mudcrabs, the Hunter Taverners’ veterans’ teams (50s, 55s, 60s, 65s, and 70s), and even international ladies’ veterans’ games. More recently, his efforts were on display during the 50s Men’s National Titles, where he went above and beyond by personally supplying equipment to assist an interstate side in need.

Beyond his curating duties, Paul serves as the head of maintenance, always ensuring that the grounds and equipment are in top shape. His recent work alongside Ray Gooley, fitting a new motor to the roller, is just one example of his hands-on commitment to keeping the game running smoothly.

As a player, Paul has donned the whites for 199 grade games with CSL—an impressive feat that would have reached 200 if Crab games counted. While he rarely takes the field these days, he remains a crucial part of the team, always ready to step in when the Mudcrabs are short on players. His dedication extends to Friday afternoons, where he selflessly bowls in the nets to help others sharpen their skills.

If that wasn’t enough, Paul is also the man behind the BBQ at home games, ensuring that players and spectators alike enjoy the complimentary feast offered by the club. Whether it’s curating pitches, fixing equipment, mentoring players, or flipping sausages, Paul is always there to lend a hand.

A true embodiment of the Aussie spirit, Paul is well known as ‘Groundskeeper Willie’ to those who have had the pleasure of working alongside him. His unwavering commitment to local cricket and his willingness to help others, both on and off the field, make him a deserving recipient of this recognition.

The Newcastle District Cricket Association extends its congratulations and gratitude to Paul for his incredible service to the game. We raise a bat to you, mate!
