Congratulations to Wallsend District Cricket Club, Tom Locker Cup Champions for Season 24/25!
Wallsend marked their 100th anniversary with a dominant victory in the Tom Locker Cup final, defeating Stockton by eight wickets at No.1 Sportsground. This win was particularly significant for the Tigers, as it was their first one-day title since the 1997-98 season.
The foundation for Wallsend’s success was laid by a disciplined bowling attack that restricted Stockton to just 164 runs. In response, Aaron Wivell played a match-winning innings, scoring an unbeaten 87 off 82 balls. Alongside captain Jacob Montgomery, who contributed an unbroken 68, the pair put on a 135-run partnership to guide their team to the target in just 26 overs.
The result was a redemption for Wallsend after losing last year’s Tom Locker final, and the victory was a fitting tribute to the club’s centenary celebrations. Wivell’s aggressive batting in the powerplay was a key highlight, with his half-century coming off just 37 balls, including 11 boundaries. His early fireworks set the tone for the chase, allowing the team to comfortably reach the target.
Stockton, who won the toss and chose to bat, struggled to build meaningful partnerships. Despite a steady 36 from Logan Weston, they were unable to recover from early breakthroughs by Wallsend’s bowlers, including the Page brothers, Jake and Lachy, who dismissed the openers cheaply.
The victory serves as a strong start for Wallsend as they aim for further success this season, with the District two-day championship, which they previously won two years ago, a major goal for the team moving forward.
Rippit Player of the Match went to Aaron Wivell.
