Glory for Waratah-Mayfield and Merewether as NDCA Women’s Grand Finals deliver a night to remember
What a night for women’s cricket in Newcastle! Under lights at No.1 Sportsground, Waratah-Mayfield and Merewether delivered two inspiring performances to claim the NDCA Women’s Cup and Plate titles in a grand final evening that truly celebrated the strength and spirit of the game.
In the Cup Final, Waratah-Mayfield showcased resilience, teamwork, and composure to secure a 10-run victory (DLS method) over a talented Newcastle City side. This marks their second title win in the six years since the competition began—and they’ve appeared in every grand final to date, an incredible achievement in itself.
Waratah-Mayfield Skipper Emma-Jayne Howe led the way with a match-high 25 not out, guiding her team through early wickets to a solid total of 7-82 off 18 overs. City’s Felicity Wharton continued her impressive form, finishing with 3-8. In response, Waratah’s bowling and fielding unit delivered under pressure. Emily Palmer was the standout with a superb five-wicket haul, earning her the Player of the Cup Final award.
Earlier in the evening, the Plate Final saw Merewether take control with a commanding batting display. Emma McRae was brilliant at the top of the order, smashing 45 off 38 balls to set up a winning total of 2-112 (16 overs). Her performance earned her the Player of the Plate Final title as Merewether held off a spirited Warners Bay effort.
The night was made even more special with the presence of several esteemed guests who helped celebrate the occasion:
– Andrew Frith of Leenane Templeton, proud sponsor of women’s cricket, presented the Player of the Cup Final award.
– Councillor Peter Gittens of the City of Newcastle officiated the coin toss and Councillor Peta Winney-Bartz presented the Player of the Plate Final award.
Their support is deeply appreciated and highlights the growing community backing behind women’s cricket in the region.
With 14 teams across two strong divisions, the NDCA women’s competition continues to go from strength to strength—nurturing young talent, welcoming new players, and creating unforgettable moments just like this one.
Congratulations to all teams, officials, volunteers, and supporters for an incredible season!
